The Story Behind The Big Fish - Rosie's Easel Unlocked Landscapes

The Big Fish

It has been exhilarating to create a piece of art that captures another piece of art- and particularly one so iconic as the big fish.. This masterpiece of public art by John Kindness has a title that captures Northern Ireland’s beautifully unpretentious, say-it-how-it-is attitude. It is indeed a big fish.

It is created of blue ceramic tiles, each one forming one of the salmon’s scales. Each tile tells a story of Belfast's rich and colourful history.

The 1963 third series Belfast map that I have used as my canvas in this piece, was published in the same year that Belfast International Airport opened. This fact gave me such drive and enthusiasm for this piece, given that part of the collection’s focus is to remind local and international tourists that we will always warmly welcome them back when it’s safe to do so.

The streets in this painting knit together perfectly to form the fish skin. They are streets which are today, vibrant, warm, welcoming and peaceful. It is so meaningful to me to piece together these historic streets with a symbol of regeneration like the Big Fish.

As well as celebrating local landmarks in this collection I am celebrating the local businesses that have put our little country on the map. Please don’t forget to go to my local businesses page on my gallery at RosiesEasel.com and see the talented traders that give Belfast its soul. Promise me that you will support them when it is safe to do so.
